Learning Remotely The College of Charleston has resources to help students learn remotely. Below are tools to assist students with modifying their learning style to an online/remote format.

Campus Alerts and Communications  

Cougar Alert  

Emergency notification system used by the College.   This is how the College will keep you updated and contact you in case of an emergency.  Review your contact information for Cougar Alert emergency notifications in MyCharleston and update if needed.

Everbridge  

You may also choose to download the Everbridge app on your phone ( App Store or Google Play ) as an additional contact method for Cougar Alert notifications.

Communication with Your Instructor 

Email  

The College uses CMail (your g.cofc.edu ) for the student’s email system. To access and send emails, log into your account through MyPortal or directly through MS Outlook.  

OAKS  

Emails can be sent to your instructor and/or classmate from within OAKS once you are in your course.    

Important : If sending an email within OAKS, you must check your g.cofc.edu  email address for recipient response.  

Video Conferencing   

Zoom  

Cloud software-based platform for video and audio conferencing with room systems. To join a class session via Zoom, see the instructions on the Zoom videos page .  

Teams  

Available to students as part of the Microsoft Office 365 Suite. Features include desktop and cloud-based communications system that offers chat, video meetings, file upload and storage. Check out the Teams video training.  

File Storage  

OneDrive  

Microsoft cloud storage service lets you store your files in one place, share them with others, and get to them from any device, anywhere, at any time.  

Google Drive  

Cloud-based storage services allow you to store your files and access them across devices through a synchronization process. See this video tutorial on accessing and saving files to Google Drive .  

Software  

Microsoft Office 365  Suite  

Desktop installation and c loud-accessible  word processing, presentation, and note-taking applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote  

Google Suite  

Allows you to reach your classmates and instructor wherever they are, store files and find them instantly safely and securely online through your CofC google account.   The software suite includes Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

OAKS   

OAKS is the online learning management system used here at CofC to take online classes.   

You can access OAKS two different ways, myportal.cofc.edu and lms.cofc.edu . If you need help with OAKS or need OAKS tutorials, get help.  Tutorials include:   

  • Logging into OAK  

  • Accessing classes, content, discussions, quizzes, VoiceThread, etc.  

If this is your first time using OAKS, register for the Introduction to OAKS for Students course .

Division of Student Affairs

The departments in the Division of Student Affairs (including Student Health Services, the Counseling Center, Disability Services, Campus Recreation Services, Student Life, and many more) are prepared to support students during the remote learning period! Please see our website for contact information, along with the programs and services each area is providing. The Division of Student Affairs is accepting applications for student emergency funding. You may apply for support via the following link on the Student Affairs website:  https://studentaffairs.cofc.edu/student-emergency-fund-application.php Applications will be reviewed and will be turned around as quickly as possible. Need considerations include: Food, medical, and basic household needs; Housing and rent; Transportation; Academic needs (books, school supplies, e-learning support, and technology).

To schedule a study skills appointment: Email us at cslstud@cofc.edu. You will receive an email with details of the day and time of your appointment and access instructions.

To access your Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions: If your course is supported by a SI, you will receive direct instructions from your SI leader and professor via email and OAKS.

To access your PAC (peer academic coaching) sessions: Your coach will reach out to you to schedule virtual meetings via Google Hangouts. Please watch for messages from your PAC and respond promptly.

Campus Libraries
